I always carry my surf rods, but it will hold 1 standard PVC style sand spike. I removed the drop down holster part and only use the middle two wraps. I carry extra spikes with velcro staps to the one in the bag.

answer 3
The bottom part of the pole holder is adjustable but probably 6 inches more. Maybe if your surf rod was a two piece rod it would work.

The only thing I would keep in mind is you might want to consider being careful about having too high of a profile. Especially if you live in an area with lightening storms and possibly low hanging power lines.

answer 4
as long as the handle is under 1 1/2'' around and break it down. that is if the rod comes in two pieces. pull it apart if you are heading in to the woods less snags that way.

The opening is 10" (the bag is 11"), and you slide the boxes in at an angle, twist them in and they do fit. You can even accommodate more boxes at the expense of upper bag room.
