MOSIN-NAGANT Mosin-Nagant Model 91/30 Rifle

Here’s an outstanding opportunity to own one of the most famous battle rifles of the 20th century at an exceptional low price. Cabela’s has acquired a supply of legendary Mosin-Nagant Model 91/30 rifles that were stored in the Ukraine by the former Soviet Union. These bolt-action firearms are in remarkably good condition. Chambered in 7.62x54R, a caliber that falls between the American .308 and .30-06 in power and ballistics, these rifles are great shooters and suitable for vintage military matches or hunting big game. Each has a top-loading five-round magazine. Rear sights are adjustable for elevation and outfitted with range marks in meters. Front sights are military post-and-globe style. Supplies are limited, so don’t miss this chance to own a completely functional piece of firearm history.

Im 15. Shot more than 450 rounds with the Mosin. Killed 2 deer last Season when I was 14. I'm A bigger build kid though. 170 Pounds 5'8ish. My buddies and me go shoot these rifles because there cheap and bullets are easy to comb by. But i will emit when i first got it i shot 3 times and i was done. But then i was determined i was gonna get a deer this year so i kept shooting. Now I love shooting it. But shooting this with a Tshirt on will hurt. But its great for when you have your large coat on!

The bolt may be hard to cycle for a youth. The Nagant stock is a bit awkward, with the steep grip angle. An aftermarket stock may help.
The M44 / T53 Carbines are smaller, but the already rough recoil is worse on the shorter rifles
A small frame person could easily shoot this rifle. Just probably not comfortably.

Well, depends on how much a kick the youth can handle. I'd say the kick is right between a 30-06, and a .308. I let my 13 yr old shoot it, and she did once, and didn't want a second shot. She is 5' 2 " and weighs 120 lbs.

The hex receiver rifles were made pre-war, and are generally found to have nicer machining than the round receiver versions. For this reason they are more desirable, and sometimes command higher prices. There are no other benefits.

Hex receivers were made before wartime and were believed to be of better quality with few tool marks, carefully assembled and stricter quality control. The round receiver was put into production after the war started to speed up the production time.

The hex receiver rifles are older however were much more likely to be a little better in quality and closer to specs. The round receiver rifles were made round in the first place simply to increase production during wartime so their consistency and fit are known to vary. If you can grab a hex receiver, do it. You won't be sorry you did.

As far as the firing pin.....there is a tool and instructions with the rifle and you can easily check/adjust the firing pin yourself. When you get it home go to You Tube and there are many videos on how to adjust the firing pin. It is quite easy when you follow the videos.

These guns, however, are usually not headspace checked beyond what they call "Field Spec", meaning, they will safely fire military surplus ammo but not neccessarily modern ammo such as Winchester white box ammo.....or re-loads. To get a rifle headspace checked you can take it to a gunsmith and they will do it for about $25 -$30.....but you already own the gun. Or you can check it in the store with your own headspace gauge. You can pick one up at http://www.okiegauges.com/ on-line. Get the "Go/NoGo" gauge from them for $20. You simply put the gauge at the end of the bolt, and try to close the bolt. If the bolt closes don't buy the rifle.....it has headspace problems. If it does not close the headspace is good for all surplus ammo AND modern ammo. Instructions come with the headspace gauge.

You can use a multitude of optics. Many of the mounts have to be drilled a tapped by a gunsmith, but there are only a few that are no drill. With any scope, you will have to have the bolt modified for a curved handle to clear. Make sure to have the new handle welded as the small machine screw supplied with many new bolt handles is not adequate for strength and reliability.

You need to get a mount kit from places like ebay or amazon. You have to remove the rear sight and install a rail that bolts on. Then you use a long eye relief scope.

For optics you have two basic options:
1) Remove the rear sight leaf and insert an after-market weaver mount. It's not reported to be the most stable, but it's cheap and easy. You can remove the entire rear sight base for a better mount, but it's much more work. You must use a long eye relief (pistol) scope.
or
2) Drill into the receiver, and mount a standard scope over the bolt. You will need to replace the straight handle bolt with a curved one. Also, you can drill a scope mount directly on the stock. Good luck holding zero.
I suggest #1 with the sight base removal. My variable 3-7X scope is rock solid on the dove tail where the base was mounted. If you want to use a higher powered scope, you must use option 2.

Heck yeah this rifle is able to be used a lot!! I bought the ATI aftermarket stock for mine, from Cabelas. Took the wood stock off, stored it, and took it to the range. I have put over 300 rounds through mine, and plan on using it as a deer rifle this year. The 7.62x54R is a great round. These rifles are old, but the Russians coated them in cosmoline, so they are in great shape.

Oh yeah, a WHOLE LOT!
It's a military weapon originally, and tough as a tank, to use a well worn saying.
It's heavy, it's long, it's accurate.
Use a 20ga bore brush and Hoppe's to clean the chamber, and the bolt will work in/out silky smooth.
Make sure you give the rifle a healthy cleaning after buying it and before firing it. They come pretty well covered in cosmoline.

There's a ton of variation in the condition of these rifles, but it's safe to say that pretty much every one has been fired at some point.
Even the good ones (with the best, brightest bores) may have been selected for possible sniper issue. They put a few rounds through them, and if the group isn't acceptable, they go back to garrison. Or storage. Or maybe Stalingrad or Kursk as standard infantry issue.
After an arsenal refinish, it's hard to tell. Even the top grade rifles usually have had some use. 70 years makes for a long, interesting service life.

All have been shot--they are military surplus. Some have been shot less than others. When you go into the Gun Library (I suggest at the opening of the store on a weekday), they have bore lights that you can look at the bore. If the end 1 to 2 1/2" is counter-bored, it has been shot a lot. If it is extremely dark or pitted, it has been shot a lot. Do not just look at the stock--it may have been banged-around a lot, so check the barrel and bore out. You can always refinish it like I did

The folks at the Cabela's where I'm at were awesome about that. Not only did they have a bunch on the rack outside the Gun Library, but the folks that helped me were more than happy to go back and get some more out of the back until I found exactly what I wanted. I do recommend, however, going on a weekday, and right away in the morning when they open in order to get someone without having to wait around and/or make other folks wait around. Hunting: Soft point, 182 to 203 grain. NEVER use mil-surp to hunt.
Target: New production FMJ 182 grain. Some mil-surp match ammo is available. Different rifles "like" specific loads / brands. You should be able to get a 2" 100 yard group with a little work.
Plinking: Surplus, Light ball, steel core. Corrosive, but cheap. Accuracy is literally hit and miss, as most surplus ammo is 30-40 years old. For "pie plate" groups.

Look for rifle ammo marked 7.62x54R. You can purchase this ammo at cabela's FMJ (full metal jacket) for target practice and soft points for deer or bear hunting. I like to purchase surplus millitary ammo in the 440 rd cans. My two mosin 91/30 shoot great with bulgarian circle 10 millitary ball. If you use surplus ammo remember to clean ASAP after shooting. Just run a patch soaked in windex/ water.. dry patch or two... then clean bore with your reg. bore cleaner... finish with patch coated with gun oil.

The easiest way to scope this rifle is to use a mount in the tangent sight. This is typically referred to as a "Scout Scope" . Once you purchase the mount it is relatively easy to install in the receptacle in which the tangent sight was located. You will need a long eye relief scope but be careful on what you buy. A pistol scope with an 18 inch eye relief may not work as I found out the hard way. I wound up with an NC star 2x6 Pistolero variable power scope with a 9 to 10 inch eye relief. However any fixed power pistolero from 2.5x thru 4x will suffice. I don't normally purchase inexpensive scopes but for tis application the NC Star scope is more than acceptable and may actually exceed expectations. Good luck in scooping your rifle.

It depends on which mount you use on your MOSIN-NAGANT. The Advanced Technology (ATI) Mosin-Nagant Scope Mount System Item: IK-221836 would allow the use of any regular rifle scope. The B-Square Classic Military Rifle Mounts Item: IK-711408 would require the use of either a handgun scope or a scout scope.

I shot all of my 91/30 rifles open sighted. However, I have seen a nice sniper mosin with scope for sale at Cabelas's Hamburg, PA. You can also purchase the soviet WWII sniper scope and mount and modify a rifle.
This will require a bent bolt handle and some gunsmithing skills. Sniper conversion information can be found on the web.

I do not know what ATI stands for. No matter any way.
Presume you will mount to the tangent sight as most mounts use that device without modifying the straight bolt handle. Any of the fill in mounts will work with different degrees of solidity. An alternative, which I would use, is to completely remove the tangent sight and mount a" 3/8 dovetail to Weaver". This is a typical mount for air gin mounts and easy to find on the I-net. Pre WWII Mosins pinned and possibly soldered the tangent sight base to the dovetail so be prepared for this should you follow this mounting method. believe this mount to be more secure than locking into the tangent sight receptacle, You can then mount a pistol scope to the weaver rail directly with no need to modify the bolt. I did say and mean a pistol scope with about a 9 inch eye relief. I have mounted these on a few similar rifles and the ( inch eye relief works very well. There are several inexpensive scope models on the market. Don't go crazy with the power magnification. 4x is ample and a 2x6, 2x7 is plenty. i have come to appreciate illuminated scopes and the offer an alternative color against black backgrounds. Remember, the Mosin is a military firearm and may not shoot any better than 1.3 inch groups at 100 yards. Test fire you Mosin to see how it groups before you go for a scope. This way you can match its ability to the power that suits your need. Lastly The Mosin Sniper rifle, which grouped better than 1.3 inches used only a 3.5x scope. Hope this helps.

Take it to a gunsmith if you want a scope, it might cost as much as what you paid for the rifle, possibly more, but if you really want a scope for this, it's the way to go. They will put on something that will not damage your rifle, i.e., get what works, not necessarily what you want.

In order to mount the Advanced Technology (ATI) Mosin-Nagant Scope Mount System, item number IK-221836, on a Mosin-Nagant Model 91/30 Rifle, item number IK-291195, permanent modification to the rifle must be made. Modification to the rifle includes cutting off the bolt handle and installing the replacement included in the package and drilling and tapping the receiver of the firearm to mount the scope. If done properly this would not weaken the rifle in any way.

After WWII, these rifles were inspected and rebuilt. Parts that are out of spec. are replaced. Most of these rifles will contain a mix of tula and Izvensk parts... due to this rebuild process. Some of these rifles received counter-boring due to soilder care in the field. Improper use of the cleaning tools resulted in damage to the crowns Thus, the first inch or two of rifling was bored out (counter-boring). After the rebuild process... these rifles were coated in cosmoline and placed into war reserve.

I believe the importers checked the head-space. I would be more concerned with bore condition.

The iron sights on a M91/30 are marked up to 2,000 meters. For an M44 carbine, I believe the sights are marked up to 1000 meters. That said both those settings are for volley fire at massed formations of infantry. You might be able to hit something the size of a deer's vitals at 100-200 yards with a Mosin-Nagant's iron sights.

Mosin's are difficult to scope, but if you managed to do it you'd probably see a maximum effective range comparable to a .308 Winchester.

Absolutely. The round used by the mosin nagant is comparable to a 30-06 round, so its got more than enough knockdown power to bring down a dear, and the rifle itself is more than accurate enough, it was used as a sniper rifle in world war 1 and 2 if proof is needed of its accuracy. Just make sure you don't try to hunt with fmj ammo, fmj doesn't mushroom like normal hunting ammo, so its harder to get a kill.

PathfinderOne makes some good points / instructions on modifying the bayonet to fit your 91/30. I own three of these rifles... each bayonet socket had to be touched up with a file and abrasive paper to fit each rifle. Every Mosin 91/30 that i own shoots dead-on with the bayonet and slightly high and to the right without. You can modify the front sight to shoot dead on at 100-200 yrds. Lots of information on the web. concerning this rifle and it's operation.

These are made of numerous parts at the factory and/or importers. Mine had matching serial numbers. The bayonet has a different number on it. It fits the rifle but could use a little sand paper to slip on and off a little easier.

I recently re fitted a tight bayonet to a Mosin Nagat 91/30 .Should you wish to have an easier assembly of the bayonet here is what to look for:
1- Check for interference between the barrel and the bayonet mounting "cylinder". Most likely this will be the first point to be relieved. Most of the interference was in the front part of the mounting cylinder. The excess material was removed from both ends with a Dremel tool.
2- The next point of interference was with the "U" shaped connecting section that gets twisted to the front sight. Both right , left and center sections were carefully filed and fitted for a good fit against the base of the front sight. Be careful fitting this "U"section. You may not have to do much filing right and left but the center may require more filing to get the spring loaded retainer to properly snap in place. Additionally, you will see that the base of the U is at an angle ... follow the angle when filing.
Summary: My Mosin now accepts a properly fitted (tight) bayonet that can be assembled by hand without tools. Now It is easy to assemble and disassemble the bayonet . And, the spring loaded retainer snaps into its proper position every time.

The bayonets included with the Mosin-Nagant Model 91/30 Rifle can be installed on the firearms however, since they were made to be used and not for decoration fit is very tight.
