This is actually an excellent question.

The SDVE series is a complete re-engineer of the troubled Sigma line.

18 Degree ergonomic tilt
Picatinny Rails
Hand position indicators on the frame
Metal on metal contact wherever moving parts touch
Smooth consistent trigger pull
Milled serrations for grip on front and back of the slide
White combat sites
Lifetime Warranty.

The only downgrade appears to be the rear sights on the Sigma were Metal and the ones on the SDVE are plastic. However both front and rear are replaceable for upgraded optics on the SDVE.

Question

What are the differences betweem the SDVE 9mm and the M&P 9mm?

I am a first time gun buyer. Will be for home protection, but I would like to do some target shooting at the range, ect. I do not have a problem with spending more if the M&P is a far superior gun, want something that my wife is comfortable with and will not fail if needed. Looking for the differences besides the obvious ones like barrel length, clip size, ect.

Thanks

The M&P and SD9VE are very similar, I have a SD9VE and I shot with M&P9 also. To me I shot better with the SD9 overall and its half the price of the M&P9 too. It's much more comfortable to hold and looks better while being very accurate and just as fun.

I currently own an SD9 and an M&P 22. The SD9 is an awesome gun for the price. I have owned many other guns and would HIGHLY recommend this gun.
The M&P 22 not quite as high of a recommendation. I do not know how different the 9mm might be in operation from the 22LR but ours, the 22 has hung up several times after a bunch of rounds(maybe 200) Doesn't seem to stay lubed enough.

The main difference that I know of because I own the SD40, is that the SD model does not have a safety button. That is the reason for the 8 lb. trigger pull. Other than that, they are very similar. If you have fired a double action revolver, the trigger pull will be very comfortable to you. It is a long trigger pull but that is just a built in safety feature. This pistol is easy to maintain. You can't go wrong with either one but I prefer the SD model.

It depends on the rules of both states. Check with your Sheriff department about bringing in a gun from out of state.

In most cases the firearm simply must meet the requirements of your state.

For example your location may have a magazine limit that would be violated should you bring a higher capacity firearm into your county.

In regards to the Smith & Wesson® SDVE Pistols, item # IK-291275, in most cases you can purchase a handgun in a state other than your home state. Once the purchase has been made you will have to ship it back to your home state to a FFL license holder who will then handle the transfer to you in your home state. You will need to find out the laws of the purchasing state and your home state to determine what is required.

I just bought this pistol yesterday, and it came with two clips (14rd ea), one (1) Regal R15SC3 gun lock with two (2) keys, instructions/manual, S&W product registration, NRA membership offer, and that's it. It DOES NOT come with plastic or fabric gun case, just a cardboard box. Disappointing, but when you consider the price, you're still getting a bargain. You can purchase a blue S&W plastic gun case from S&W for cheap, if you want a uniform brand between the gun and the case. The keys themselves are TINY, and make me nervous about misplacing them.
