answer 3
The .257 Roberts round is a long action round and requires that for an action like the .257 Cabela's 50th Anniversary Special Edition rifle. A short action round would be one like a .308 and if that is what you want or need, I suggest a 7mm08 which was touted on the internet as the cure for the magnum addiction. Both the .257 Roberts and the 7mm08 are excellent rounds for anything other than real big game. The action is not blocked to my knowledge.

answer 4
The .257 Roberts is a long action weapon. The round was made by Ned Roberts in 1930 something . It has taken just about every big game in north America. It is a great weapon to have . The only down fall is you might have some problems finding ammo for it . So reloading your own might be best.

Winchester made the rifle. They say it is long action, Chuck Hawk's lists it as long action, Jack O'Connor listed it as long action in his rifle book. How did it get to be a Cabela's Best Answer as a short action???

answer 3
The Cabela's 50th Anniv. Model 70 Special Edition .257 Roberts is exactly 42 and 1/2 inches total length with its 22 inch barrel and the Winchester red recoil pad. The recoil pad could be slimmed down by going to a thinner recoil pad as the recoil from the sweet shooting .257 Roberts is so forgiving. But anyone would be first advised to use the rifle as built first because it doesn't get any better than this!

I have a GREAT interest in rifle stocks as I have made them for years for both bolt action rifles and flintlock Pennsylvania and Kentucky long rifles. Walnut graded 1 thru 5 almost automatically means it is American Walnut. Grade 1 is just regular wood with no defects. Grade 3 is nicely figured but that grade is based on butt to trigger area and not all the way up to the fore end of the stock. Grade 4 and 5 is very nicely figured but does not tell you in any way what that pattern is! Fancy is above Grade 3. Again it does not ell what the grain pattern is. Exhibition and Select is above fancy. Problem is that a manufacturer like Winchester does NOT allow the customer to pick the exact blank out. Go to a custom stocker comes with a staggering price. Too bad Winchester does not offer the customer to pick an exact stock. If you become really interested in wooden stocks (they hold up very well compared to synthetic) you will learn you like some grain patterns and would not pick others. Claro Walnut (California) and Bastongne, and English Walnuts including those grown in France, etc. are usually graded in A thru C.

Yes. Most current Model 70s by FN have this. I have the Jack O'Connor .270, the Cabela's 50th .257 Roberts, a Super Grade .243 Model 70 and this rifle has the same type of pre-64 set up. For what it is worth I have owned two 1985 non-pre 64s and they were dependable, acccurate, and well made. Those two rifles were modestly priced and hold their value well.

Owning Model 700 Remingtons, Ruger Hawkeyes, etc. I can say this rifle is one of the best of the best. I am not into mindless brand loyalty. Winchester Model 70s have for years been really nice rifles and very well made and very accurate. I have yet to see a new Model 70 without a perfect bolt system on it.
