CABELA'S Cabela's Alaskan Guide® Series Vanguard Rubber-Handled Knife by Buck Knives®

Sporting a 4-1/8" drop-point crafted of strong S30V steel, the Vanguard has a rubber handle and a polished brass butt and guard. Developed by Crucible Steel, S30V is made up of metallic powders fused together under intense pressure and heat. It is tempered under extremely high temperatures then cooled in a cryogenic freezer. The resulting metal delivers a fine combination of edge retention (45% greater than 420HC), flexibility and hardness (59-61 Rockwell) while remaining easy to sharpen with conventional stones. This steel also has a high chromium content for oxidation resistance. For even greater corrosion resistance, each knife is treated with a titanium aluminum nitride coating. Our field testing and independent Cutlery Allied Trade Research Association tests prove this knife outperforms those crafted with other blade metals. It also has a Codura® nylon sheath. Made in USA. Overall length: 8-1/2". Weight: 6.3 oz.

Mine is the rubber grip so it has the nylon sheath. My belt is 1.5 in and it fits fine. I would imagine the leather sheath would fit the same.

answer 2
Yes it is. The tang is not the full width of the blade however, its about 3/4 of an inch wide I'd say. The rear brass plate at the butt of the knife is removable by unscrewing it. Then you can remove the rubber handle and see for yourself (if you own the knife)

answer 3
No this is not a full tang knife. It is what is called a Rat Tail tang. It runs the full length of the knife but it is very narrow. It has nowhere near the strength of a true full tang knife. This a very fine hunting knife but I would not use it for fire wood. It does not have the strength required for batoning thru wood. It is an outstanding knife for field dressing game. It is not a survival knife.

Yes, the rosewood-handled knife has a very nice and strong leather sheath. The snap is strong, but easily flipped open by finger action. Will fit on anything up to 2" belt.

Touch it up with a diamond hone. If you really beat it up, you will have to carefully grind it on a premium stone and then do final sharpening with diamond hone.

Question

Is it possible to buy one without the black coating?

The "black widow" coating keeps coming off from my knife. The knife is perfect otherwise; I would like to order another one with just the plain metal blade if possible.

In regards to the Cabela's Alaskan Guide® Series Vanguard Knife, 516493, we are unable to special order different styles of Cabela's exclusive products. I would contact Buck directly as this sounds like maybe your knife is defective with the coating coming off. The contact for Buck is (800) 326-2825.

Question

Do both versions (the rubber handle as well as the rosewood handle) come with the leather sheath?

I only saw the leather sheath advertised with this knife, and ordered and received the rubber handled version along with a nylon sheath. I'm not happy with the sheath, but the knife is fantastic initially (only owned for one day).
