Question

Since the gears on this stuffer do not fit the old commercial grade stuffer (green style), are there better gears for the old model?

Replacing sub-par gears with sub-par gears doesn't work and is becoming expensive. Are stronger gears available?

The gears are made of carbon steel and the plunger shaft is aluminum. The only difference beside the color is the newer models plunger shaft has fill markings to let you know when your are almost out of meat.

Question

Does Cabelas allow any trade-in on the older green stuffers? .

They were very pricey to buy, but cheaply built. Can I up-grade reasonably? I have a #20 and the gears are badly worn.
I have 2 Cabelas grinders, and like them but I am very dissapointed with the stuffer. I can't afford another new one.

answer 2
Most of the gear problems seem to be related to the green model. The newer model has a stonger gear system. The oldeer model seemed to work fine if there was enough water or oil added to the meat when using the smaller tubes. Even the new system requires you to thin the material if you are using a small stuffing tube. If you don't, you will notice that it requires a lot of torque to turn the crank and puts a lot of stress on the system.

As an owner of the Cabela's Commercial-Grade Veritical Stuffer and making snack sticks all the time, it is very easy to do. Instructions are included with the stuffer and the seasoning kits we sell that when stuffing ground meat through the 20mm tube you will need extra water and or oil added into the mix to allow it to be soft enough to pass through such a small diameter tube.

It's easy to mix with a kit from Cabela's but you have to have the mix very watered down to get it through the stuffer its very hard on the gears of the stuffer.

My first batch of sausages (ever) was with the spicy snack stick kit and they were awesome! I would recommend adding more water than the recipe calls for if you use the smallest stuffing tube like I did. Also, having a good stuffer makes a huge difference. So, I guess my answer is, with one of the complete kits, pretty easy.
